DIY Weddings - Doing Your Wedding YOUR Way!
He who pays for the wedding ultimately controls the wedding. Sometimes the only way to get what you want is
to finance your own wedding. That may mean a limited budget; what you lack in money, you'll have to make up
for in effort, but many of the restrictions reside only in your imagination. We'll furnish examples of how to get
what you want on a limited budget. Let your imagination guide you from here.
Wedding Invitations
Printing your own wedding invitations will save you hundreds of dollars. You'll get exactly what you want in look
and feel and wording.
Wedding and Bridesmaid Gowns
Where else but the Internet can you easily find a $2000 formal designer wedding dress for under $500 and formal
bridesmaid dresses in the $100-200 range. Fire up your favorite search engine, and type the following words, in quotes:
"cheap wedding dress."
Bouquets, Floral Arrangements and Boutonnières
Purchase your flowers at a grocery store or mega-club wholesale store. Talk with the person in charge of the florist
department, and ask if you can have your pick of day-old flowers at a discount. Ask for recommendations for a flower arranger.
Photography
Ask qualified friends to photograph and video your wedding. Place throwaway cameras at each table and let
guests snap candid photos during the reception. Everyone can upload their digital photographs, and you can
share the best with others on a Website. Print selected photographs on a high-quality inkjet printer.
At-home Weddings
Plan your wedding surrounded by simple gardens, and you won't have to worry about flower arrangements.
There's no need to make alternate arrangements in case of rain; that's why the big-tent was invented.
Reception Food
If you're planning an at-home wedding, you can put on an elegant reception for $10 per person.
With a spare refrigerator or freezer, you can purchase ingredients ahead of time on sale, and prepare heavy hor d'oeuvres
well in advance of the wedding. Enlist family members to heat and serve and hire someone to clean up.
Wedding Music
Arrange for a violinist for the ceremony and a DJ for the reception. A few days after the wedding, no one will
remember or care whether you had a band.
Rehearsal Dinner
Reserve your condo clubhouse and serve a gourmet "heat and serve" meal from your local upscale grocery's deli
department. Alternatively, consider a riverboat dinner cruise or a mystery theater evening for your bridal party.
Wedding Websites
Search the Internet for turnkey wedding Websites, or create one of your own. This will save you hours of telephone
conversation. Make it as simple or elaborate as you like, including:
- RSVP form
- Maps to wedding events
- Link to an interactive map site
- Links to your bridal registries
- Wedding blog
- Photo album of wedding events
